Proscelidodon was named by Bordas (1935). It is not extant. Its type is Proscelidodon patrius.
It was assigned to Mylodontidae by Carroll (1988); to Megatheriidae by MacFadden et al. (1993); and to Scelidotheriinae by Pujos et al. (2012), Varela et al. (2019), Montalvo et al. (2020).
