Corineorthis gigantea was named by Termier and Termier (1950). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Great Kabylia, which is in a Katian marine shale in the Djurdjura Limestone Formation of Algeria. It is the type species of Irhirea.
It was recombined as Irhirea gigantea by Havlicek (1971).
