Aluralagus virginiae was named by Downey (1970). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Curtis Floss, which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in the St. David Formation of Arizona.
It was recombined as Hypolagus virginiae by Tomida (1987).
