Necrocarcinus tricarinatus was named by Bell (1863).
It was recombined as Orithopsis tricarinata by Vega et al. (2010) and van Bakel et al. (2012); it was recombined as Orithopsis tricarinatus by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Karasawa et al. (2014), Schweitzer et al. (2016) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
