Orthis calligramma was named by Dalman (1828). Its type specimen is RM Br102501, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Orthambonites calligramma by Rubel (1961) and Jaanusson and Bassett (1993); it was misspelled as Orthis calligrama by Suarez Soruco (1976); it was recombined as Orthambonites calligramme by Rasmussen and Harper (2008).
