Palaeoniscus reussi was named by Heckel and Kner (1861). Its type specimen is NMP M 1215, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Amblypterus reussi by Woodward (1891); it was recombined as Paramblypterus reussi by Štamberg (1976).
