Adelophthalmus was named by Meek and Worthen (1868) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. Its type is Adelophthalmus (Eurypterus) granosus. It is the type genus of Adelophthalmidae, Adelophthalmoidea.
It was reranked as Eurypterus (Adelophthalmus) by Jordan and Meyer (1854); it was reranked as Eurypterus (Anthraconectes) by Meek and Worthen (1868); it was synonymized subjectively with Lepidoderma by Størmer (1955); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eurypterus by Kjellesvig-Waering (1958).
It was assigned to Eurypterus by Jordan and Meyer (1854) and Meek and Worthen (1868); to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Adelophthalmidae by Brauckmann et al. (2003), Tetlie and Dunlop (2005), Lamsdell et al. (2013), Dunlop et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
