Taxonomy
Orthoceras styloideum was named by Barrande (1874). It is the type species of Protobactrites.

It was recombined as Protobactrites styloideum by Hyatt (1900).

elliptical in section, ornamented with transverse and sometimes longitudinal striae. Siphuncle tubular, centren or near the centre.
Truncation occurs in some species, and others are more or less
transitional to Bactrites among the Ammonoids.
