Microtus paroperarius was named by Hibbard (1944). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cudahy, which is in an Irvingtonian terrestrial ash in the Crooked Creek Formation of Kansas.
It was recombined as Neodon paroperarius by Martin (1974).
