Pelecanoidea was named by Rafinesque (1815). It is extant. Its type is Pelecanus.

It was corrected as Pelecanoidae by Hay (1930).

It was assigned to Steganopodes by Hay (1902); to Pelecaniformes by Hay (1930); and to Pelecani by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960).
