Maia spinosissima was named by Lamarck (1818). It is extant. It is the type species of Maguimithrax.
It was recombined as Mithrax (Mithrax) spinosissimus by Collins and Morris (1976); it was recombined as Mithrax spinosissimus by Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Maguimithrax spinosissima by Luque et al. (2017); it was recombined as Maguimithrax spinosissimus by Schweitzer et al. (2020).
