Sycotypus ocoyanus was named by Conrad (1855).

It was recombined as Ficus (Trophosycon) ocoyanus by Loel and Corey (1932); it was recombined as Trophosycon ocoyanum by Moore (1963); it was misspelled as Ficus (Trophosycon) ocoyana by Stanton (1966).
