Palauchenia mexicana was named by del Castillo (1869) [genotype].

It was recombined as Gigantocamelus mexicanus by Silva-Bárcenas (1969) and Ferrusquia (1978); it was recombined as Camelops mexicanus by Dalquest (1974), Mooser and Dalquest (1975).
