Ammonites erato was named by d'Orbigny (1850). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.R02016 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Lissoceratoides erato by Schlegelmilch (1994), Parent (2006) and Parent and Garrido (2015); it was recombined as Lissoceras erato by Pavia and Fernandez-Lopez (2019).
