Baminornis zhenghensis
Taxonomy
Baminornis zhenghensis was named by Chen et al. (2025). Its type specimen is IVPP V33259, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is near Yangyuan Village, Zhenghe, which is in a Kimmeridgian/Tithonian mire/swamp mudstone/tuff in the Nanyuan Formation of China. It is the type species of Baminornis.

Chen et al. 2025 | Baminornis is distinguishable from all other avialans in the following combination of character states (*denotes probable autapomorphy): fused pygostyle that curves dorsally and is longer than metacarpal II (the three manual digits of maniraptorans are here described as I, II and III, following a previous study28)*; strut-like coracoid that is separated from the scapula; boomerang-shaped furcula with an interclavicular angle of 65°; semilunate carpal that has no contact with metacarpal III; metacarpal I that has an asymmetric ginglymoid distal articulation with enlarged medial condyle*; metacarpal III that extends further distally than metacarpal II; manual phalangeal formula 2-3-4; elongate manual phalanx I-1 1.4× longer than manual phalanx II-1; ungual of manual digit I twice as large as that of digit III*; manual digit III that has four phalanges and is shorter than metacarpal III; and ischium that lacks both the obturator and posterior processes*. |
