Mytilus attenuatus was named by Meek and Hayden (1857) [DISTRIBUTION: Campanian; Western Interior.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Modiola attenuata by Deshayes (1836) and Meek and Hayden (1860); it was recombined as Volsella attenuata by Russell and Landes (1937); it was recombined as Modiolus attenuatus by Speden (1970); it was recombined as Lithophaga (Labis) attenuata by Coan et al. (2000), Hendy (2021).
