Archaeosiilik gilmulli
Taxonomy
Archaeosiilik gilmulli was named by Brinkman et al. (2025). Its type specimen is UAMES 52356, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Paul’s Pearls, Colville River, which is in a Campanian coarse channel fill sandstone in the Prince Creek Formation of Alaska. It is the type species of Archaeosiilik.

Brinkman et al. 2025 | Archaeosiilik gilmulli is included in the Esocidae because of the presence of C-shaped tooth bases, indicating that it had depressible teeth like that of the extant genus, Esox. Differs from all other members of the family by the following combination of features: dentaries short, with a ventral flange at the anterior end of the dentary that extends below the main body of the dentary, resulting in a constriction a short distance posterior to the symphysis when seen in lateral view; one to two rows of teeth present, where two rows are present, the teeth of the inner row are much larger than the teeth of the outer row; a ridge is present on inner surface of dentary marking the medial edge of sub-dental shelf; a shallow depression is present on internal surface of the dentary below the sub-dental shelf. |
