Hypolophidae was named by Leriche (1902). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Hypolophinae by Last et al. (2016), Adnet et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Euselachii by Dartevelle and Casier (1943); to Rajiformes by Herman (1977); and to Dasyatidae by Last et al. (2016), Adnet et al. (2018).
