Carcharias disauris was named by Agassiz (1835).

It was recombined as Carcharodon disauris by Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Otodus auriculatus disauris by Zhelezko and Kozlov (1999); it was recombined as Carcharocles disauris by Farrés (2002).
