It was assigned to Pelocetidae by Steeman (2007); to Cetotheriidae by Kellogg (1969), Whitmore (1984), Gottfried et al. (1994), McKenna and Bell (1997), Whitmore and Barnes (2008); to Mysticeti by Uhen et al. (2008); and to Chaeomysticeti by Berta (2017).
