Cryptonemiales was named by Schmitz (1892). It is extant.

It was replaced with Halymeniales by Saunders and Kraft (1996).

It was assigned to Rhodophyta by Parker and Dawson (1965); to Florideae by James et al. (1988); to Rhodophyceae by Howe (1934), Souaya (1963), Wnendt-Juber (1990); and to Florideophyceae by Stockar (2000).
