Taxonomy
Huayangosauridae was named by Dong et al. (1982). Its type is Huayangosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Maidment et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Stegosauria by Ulansky (2014); to Stegosauria by Galton (1990), Carpenter et al. (2001), Blows (2001), Galton and Upchurch (2004), Tumanova and Alifanov (2018); and to Stegosauria by Olshevsky and Ford (1993), Maidment et al. (2008), Fonseca et al. (2024), Sánchez-Fenollosa and Cobos (2025).
It was assigned to Stegosauria by Ulansky (2014); to Stegosauria by Galton (1990), Carpenter et al. (2001), Blows (2001), Galton and Upchurch (2004), Tumanova and Alifanov (2018); and to Stegosauria by Olshevsky and Ford (1993), Maidment et al. (2008), Fonseca et al. (2024), Sánchez-Fenollosa and Cobos (2025).
