Breviceratops was named by Kurzanov (1990). Its type is Protoceratops kozlowskii.
It was synonymized subjectively with Bagaceratops by Sereno (2000), Lambert et al. (2001), You and Dodson (2004), Chinnery and Horner (2007).
It was assigned to Neoceratopsia by Chinnery and Weishampel (1998); to Protoceratopidae by Olshevsky and Ford (1994), Tereshchenko and Alifanov (2003); to Bagaceratopidae by Alifanov (2003), Alifanov (2008); and to Protoceratopsidae by Kurzanov (1990), Kurzanov (1992), Dodson (1997), Czepiński (2019).
