Breviceratops kozlowskii
Taxonomy
Protoceratops kozlowskii was named by Maryanska and Osmólska (1975). Its type specimen is ZPAL MgD-I/117, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Khulsan, site 5 [PMPE], which is in a Campanian/Campanian terrestrial sandstone in the Baruungoyot Formation of Mongolia. It is the type species of Breviceratops.
It was synonymized subjectively with Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi by Sereno (2000), Lambert et al. (2001), You and Dodson (2004); it was misspelled as Breviceratops kozlovskii by Mikhailov (1997), Osmólska (1997); it was recombined as Breviceratops kozlowskii by Kurzanov (1990), Dong and Currie (1994), Barsbold (1997), Osmólska (1997), Tereshchenko and Alifanov (2003), Alifanov (2008), Xu et al. (2010), Czepiński (2019), Czepiński (2020).

Among Protoceratopsidae it shares the plesiomorphic condition of the presence of the premaxillary teeth with P. andrewsi, lack of the V-shaped buccal crest of the dentary with Protoceratops spp., and the presence of the accessory antorbital fenestration with Bag. rozhdestvenskyi. Morphology of the nasals remains unknown. |
