Ostrea pleuronectes was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Recent; Eastern Pacific-Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Amussium, Pleuronectes.
It was recombined as Pleuronectes pleuronectes by Bronn (1832); it was recombined as Pecten (Amusium) pleuronectes by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Amusium pleuronectes by Oostingh (1935), Rombouts (1991), Lamprell and Whitehead (1992), Skwarko (1994), Waller (2011).
