Ornithomimipus was named by Sternberg (1926). It is the type genus of Ornithomimipodidae.
It was assigned to Coelurosauria by Haubold (1971); to Saurischia by Kuhn (1958), Haubold (1974); to Ornithomimidae by Sternberg (1926), Russell (1930), Lockley (1992), Jaillard et al. (1993); to Theropoda by Romero Molina et al. (2003); to Theropoda by Kuhn (1963), Gangloff et al. (2004); and to Ornithomimipodidae by Lockley et al. (2011).
