Spinosuchus was named by Huene (1932). Its type is Spinosuchus caseanus.
It was assigned to Coelurosauria by Kuhn (1939); to Saurischia by Huene (1940); to Procompsognathidae by Romer (1966); to Podokesauridae by Romer (1956), Tatarinov (1964), Steel (1970), Anderson and Cruickshank (1978); to Archosauromorpha by Murry and Long (1997); to Archosauriformes by Nesbitt et al. (2007); and to Trilophosauridae by Spielmann et al. (2009).
