Plasiochiton curiosus was named by Hoare (2000). Its type specimen is USNM 456242. Its type locality is Abandoned shale pit, intersection of US 11-15 & Penn. 104, Perry Co., PA, which is in a Givetian carbonate shale in the Mahantango Formation of Pennsylvania.
