Domatoceras texanum was named by Tucker and Mapes (1978). Its type specimen is SUI42478. Its type locality is Locality 3, Lake Bridgeport Shale, Wise Co., TX, which is in a Missourian marine shale in the Wolf Mountain Formation of Texas.
