Deinodontinae was named by Matthew and Brown (1922). Its type is Deinodon.

It was assigned to Deinodontidae by Matthew and Brown (1922), Hay (1930), Kuhn (1966).

Synonyms

Aublysodontinae was named by Nopcsa (1928). Its type is Aublysodon. It was considered monophyletic by Currie (2000).

It was synonymized subjectively with Deinodontinae by Kuhn (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Tyrannosaurinae by Currie (2003).

It was assigned to Megalosaurinidae by Nopcsa (1928); and to Tyrannosauridae by Paul (1988), Holtz (1997), Manabe (1999), Currie (2000), Holtz (2001).
