Archaeophiinae was named by Janensch (1906) [Rage et al. attribute the name to Janensch (1906). However, Janensch erected Archaeophidae, not a subfamily.].

It was assigned to Palaeophiidae by Rage (1984), Rage et al. (2003), Kristensen et al. (2012).
