Balaenotus meneghinii was named by Capellini (1876) [named in footnote on p. 451 as B[alaenotus] menghinii]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Monte Aperto, which is in a Pliocene marine horizon in Italy.
It was recombined as Balaena meneghinii by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904).
