Taxonomy
Proterotherium prosistens was named by Ameghino (1899). It is not extant. Its type specimen is MACN A 11626, maxillae with right P4-M3, left P3-4 and M2-3, right mandible with, a skull.

It was recombined as Tetramerorhinus prosistens by Kramarz and Bond (2005).
