Leipsanolestes simpsoni was named by Bown (1979). It is the type species of Auroralestes.
It was recombined as Eolestes simpsoni by Bown and Schankler (1982), Novacek et al. (1985); it was recombined as Auroralestes simpsoni by Holroyd et al. (2004).
