Ophileta owenana was named by Meek and Worthen (1868). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Eccyliopterus owenanus by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was recombined as Eccyliomphalus owenanus by Wilson (1951); it was recombined as Ecculiomphalus owenanus by Sloan and Webers (1987).
