Stylonema praeteritum was named by Longstaff (1909) [Stylonema (?) praeteritum Longstaff 1909]. It is not extant. Its type locality is Locality 6. Ladywell Wood of Mulloch Hill, which is in a Rhuddanian carbonate limestone in the Mulloch Hill Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Loxonema praeteritum by Rohr et al. (1979) and Wagner (2023).
