Aetobatis arcuatus was named by Agassiz (1843).
It was synonymized subjectively with Aetobatis irregularis by Leriche (1942); it was recombined as Aetobatus arcuatus by Cope (1868), Hay (1902), Leriche (1938), Jonet (1968), Cappetta (1973), Nolf (1988), Mora Morote (1997), Iturralde-Vinent et al. (1998), Laurito and Valerio (2008), Brisswalter (2009), Vialle et al. (2011), Kent (2018), Everaert et al. (2019).
It was synonymized subjectively with Aetobatis irregularis by Leriche (1942); it was recombined as Aetobatus arcuatus by Cope (1868), Hay (1902), Leriche (1938), Jonet (1968), Cappetta (1973), Nolf (1988), Mora Morote (1997), Iturralde-Vinent et al.
