Cetotherium (Cetotheriophanes) was named by Brandt (1873). Its type is Cetotheriophanes capellinii.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cetotherium by Lydekker (1887); it was synonymized subjectively with Plesiocetus by True (1912); it was synonymized subjectively with Balaenoptera by Simpson (1945), McKenna and Bell (1997); it was considered a nomen dubium by Kellogg (1931); it was reranked as Cetotheriophanes by Kellogg (1928), Deméré et al. (2005), Berta (2017).
