Taxonomy
Asterinidae was named by Gray (1840). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and paraphyletic by Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Leptognathina by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Hess (1972); to Spinulosida by Gale (2011); and to Valvatida by Perrier (1893), Gale (1987), Blake (1989), Mah and Blake (2012) and Gale (2020).
