Mystacoceta was named by Ameghino (1889) [McKenna and Bell (1997) state that Haeckel (1895, p. 566) coined this name.]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Mysticeti by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Cetacea by Ameghino (1889), Ameghino (1894).
