Ancyloceras was named by d'Orbigny (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-l K Apti-u]. Its type is Ancyloceras matheronianum. It is the type genus of Ancylocerataceae, Ancyloceratidae, Ancyloceratinae.
It was reranked as Crioceras (Ancyloceras) by Gabb (1864).
