Orthotetidae was named by Waagen (1884) [Nom. transl. McEwan (1939, p. 619) from Orthotetinae Waagen (1884)].
It was assigned to Orthotetacea by Boucot and Johnson (1964); to Strophomenida by Archbold (1991); and to Orthotetoidea by Williams et al. (2000).
