Horolodectes was named by Scott et al. (2006). Its type is Horolodectes sunae. It is the type genus of Horolodectidae. It was considered monophyletic by Scott et al. (2006).

It was assigned to Eutheria by Scott et al. (2006); and to Horolodectidae by Scott (2019).
