Pleurotoma lunata was named by Lea (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; Virginia.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Cymatosyrinx lunata by Dall (1889), Tucker and Wilson (1933), DuBar (1958), Olsson (1967).
