Niso (Niso) mesata was named by Woodring (1970) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; Panama.]. Its type specimen is USNM 646079, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Woodring loc. 138a [lower Gatun Fm], which is in a Tortonian marine sandstone in the Gatun Formation of Panama.
