Polyodon was named by Lacépède (1797). It is extant. Its type is Polyodon spathula. It is the type genus of Polyodontidae, Polyodontinae, Polyodontini.

It was assigned to Polyodontini by Grande and Bemis (1996); and to Polyodontidae by Grande and Hilton (2006).
