Venus plena nucea was named by Dall (1903) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene; Virginia.]. Its type specimen is USNM 163418, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Venus (Mercenaria) plena nucea by Gardner (1943).
