Macoma cookei was named by Gardner (1943) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene; Atlantic Coastal Plain.]. Its type specimen is USNM 325592, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Macoma (Macoma) cookei by Hendy et al. (2008).
