Taxonomy
Ptycholepis monilifer was named by Woodward (1895). Its type specimen is BMNH 39868, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lyme Regis, Lower Lias unspecified (BMNH), which is in a Sinemurian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
