Agnopterus was named by Milne-Edwards (1868).
It was assigned to Phoenicopteri by Zittel (1890); to Agnopteridae by Lambrecht (1933), Howard (1955), Wetmore (1960), Brunet (1970); to Phoenicopteridae by Mlíkovsky and Svec (1986); to Cariamidae by Mlikovsky (2002); and to Phoenicopteriformes by Sangster (2005).
